Our country is built upon the shoulders of metal fabrication. Metal is used to build bridges, construct skyscrapers, create automobiles…our whole infrastructure relies on metals like steel, iron, and aluminum! Metal was and continues to be the heavy-duty material of choice – so long as it’s properly finished. That’s where Powder Coating comes into play.

Until the 1960s, most metal fabricators chose to finish their project with liquid solvent-based paint, but that was a time-consuming and fussy process that had to be done just right. In the ‘50s, plenty of fabricators followed the trend of chromium finishes (a flashy choice, indeed), but that was expensive and just as time-consuming as liquid paint!

Finally, there was a breakthrough in the ‘60s when powder coating finishes jumped from the science labs into the market. Metal fabricators saw huge advantages to using this technique over the others, and it’s popularity exploded. The Powder Coating Institute reports that today, 15% of all product finishes around the globe are powder coated!

So why all the hype? What are the benefits of powder coating that other finishing methods just don’t have? Glad you asked!

1. Environmentally Friendly

Paint and other coatings are chock-full of solvents and other chemicals that pollute the air and seep into the ground during the application, even afterward. Powder coating does not contain these hazardous materials, so it’s better for the planet and safer for the fabricator using it. Plus, it produces less waste since it’s less likely to run or drip off of the metal’s surface, and can be recycled.

2. Powder Coating has Better Efficiency

With paint finishes, you have to wait for each coat to dry before you apply the next one. And when you’re finished with

all three coats, you have to wait even longer for the piece to be dry enough to handle – which is a massive blow to production time!

Powder coating cuts the turnaround time in half. Three coats can be applied at once, no lag time between each coat, and they all will cure evenly. Once the layers of powder coating are applied to the metal, you don’t have to wait nearly as long for them to cure and can handle the finished piece within an hour. This translates to completed projects in a matter of days instead of weeks!

3. Provides a Better Value

You can probably guess that less waste and less production time adds up to better costs. But powder coating is budget-friendly in other ways too and is cheaper than paint finishes right from the start.

When you order a paint finish project, the materials are purchased based off of an estimate – or “guesstimate” – of how much paint is required. There’s usually an overage, and those materials go to waste in the end! With powder coating, the raw materials are purchased based on the exact size and specs of the project, so every bit is put to good use. The finish will last for up to 20 years too, which means way more bang for your buck.
